10:40 in Portland

We just created our journal and thought it may be nice to write an initial post. Well, let's see, where do we start? Today we were bitten by all sorts of crazy spiders, monkeys, and other volunteers, including one another. We thought we were tough enough to handle the Peace Corps, but phew! Ok, so in fact it's 10:40 on Monday, June 2nd and tomorrow's a work day here in Portland, Oregon. The only news we have thus far is that we'll be attending our staging event somewhere in the States from July 7th to the 9th, before flying to Honduras. Thanks for your interest in our goings on, and stay tuned for the next update!

Is training still in Santa Lucia? I thought they moved it to Valle de Angeles?

I was surfing the web, typed in Peace Corps Honduras and stumbled upon your blog. I am also from Portland and will be leaving for Honduras July 7. I'd love to get in touch with you!
Oh, my name is Elizabeth, email esroberson@gmail.com, sweet!

Mike - Thanks for the offer. We'll definitely email with a few questions before we ship out.

Hondu12 - I'm not certain where training is. I've heard that it's in Santa Lucia, but I can't be certain that's the most up to date info.

Elizabeth - How cool. Emily and I would love to meet up with before we head out. We live in Northwest on 22nd and Everett. It may be fun to go to dinner in this area. We're also quite open to eating in another part of town.

Hey! Good to see another July recruit!

Is anyone else on the facebook group? It doesn't seem to have too much activity...

Ana said...

Lenore, has a specific group been created for Hondu 13? Or are you talking about a more generic group on Facebk?

Dan and Emily, thanks for being the vehicle us July Hondu folks are meeting through :)

Hi Lauren and Mark,
We're getting more excited by the day to meet you and the other volunteers we'll be joining very shortly. Have safe travels and we'll see you in D.C. soon.

Hey folks,
I guess I stumbled on some future Honduras Peace Corps volunteers. Will you all be attending staging on July 7th-9th in D.C.? I just got my staging packet the other day, what a process this has been thus far. If anyone wants to connect before we meet in D.C. add me on facebook (Chad Ryerson) or shoot me an e-mail at Ryerson.Chad@gmail.com. I am a Master’s International student from the School for International Training and will be both volunteering and writing my Master’s Capstone over the next two years.

Cheers,
Chad

Dan and Emily,

Thank you for creating an online group for the Hondu 13 people to meet.

Now, what is everyone taking for luggage? I have one of those duffel/suitcases on wheels that I plan to use. I'm also taking a 'weekend' sized backpacking pack with me as my carry-on (it's a perfect size for plane overhead compartments). I have a daypack that I will take empty and stuff inside of the suitcase for once I'm in-country for my day-to-day.

Its nice to see that we wont be the only married people there. I wasn't sure how many couples go. We look forward to meeting all of you in D.C. and Honduras.

I love that everyone has decided to leave messages under Dan and Emily's comments section. It shows we know how to take advantage of resources, right? I thought I'd introduce myself since I am really looking forward to meeting all of you. My name is Sara and I will be with the 2008 July group in Youth Development. Feel free to shoot me a message if you'd like to discuss packing lists or whatnot. See you all in a couple weeks.

We're glad that this blog has been a good place to congregate for several of us thus far. It'll be so nice to meet all of you in person! Regarding the packing questions, we've followed the recommendations listed in the welcome book fairly closely. A couple times we've said, "Let's take a few fewer of this and a few more of that, and oh yeah, we don't need one of those," but for the most part that list has proven to be effective. I'd also make a plug to email Mike Woods (see above) - we plan to. Lastly, if you had Amanda Mendelson as your placement officer, keep in mind that she's a recent RPCV from Honduras and may be a good resource if she's able to get back to you.

I wish I could have seen you before your departure, but I will look forward to following the updates and seeing the pictures.

Love to you both

Best of luck!!!!!! I can't wait to hear your stories.

Also, the blog is a nice modern idea, but try writing real letters home. And to others reading this, send real letters to Dan and Emily. As an RPCV from pre-email times, there is nothing like getting something tangible from home.

Dan and Emily,

Thanks for emailing me the link to your blog. I look forward to reading about your adventures over the next couple years, and beyond. Have an awesome time!
